Shun'ou Fu

Because the Fiefdom of Satsuma has subjugated their country, the young people of Ryuukyuu cannot look at Yamato without hate. It is through personal relationships that the people throw away their hate, discovering a new way to live. From February when the sakura begins to bloom in Ryuukyuu, until May when the sakura begins to bloom in the northern lands, this story unfolds, following the front of the cherry blooms.

April 5th, Keicho 14 (1609), Shou Nei, at his wit's end before the invading forces of Satsuma, capitulates. Ryuukyuu, which has no custom of carrying weapons, had no way of carrying out an effective opposition. Shou Nei, who has given up the Shuri Palace, his wife Mazenikane, his younger brother Gushichan, his prime minister Jana Rizanalong with a hundred other prisonersare taken to Satsuma. The people of Ryuukyuu live in sorrow and watchfulness, and when Jana Ryuuzan would oppose the Satsuma occupying forces, his captured father Rizan remonstrates with him: "My death alone is enough."

The military commander of Ryuukyuu on behalf of Satsuma, Kabayama Hisataka, brings all of the Jana family to Satsuma as hostages: Ryuuzan's mother Agi, his younger brother Amara, and his younger sister Ato. Ryuuzan, who holds a degree from studying abroad in Yamato, is commanded to remain behind, working as a subordinate for the Satsuma who control Ryuukyuu. After Shou Nei and the others leave Ryuukyuu, Ryuukyuu nobles Nakagusuku Anjin and Itarashiki Kenchuu beg Ryuuzan to take command for the sake of protecting the nation of Ryuukyuu, and to go recapture the king from Satsuma. But to do that, Ryuuzan would be abandoning his family to their fate.

One year later, the imperial family is being held under house arrest in Satsuma as prisoners, without receiving the deference they are due, but maintaining a docile attitude, and Rizan is being held in a lunatic asylum, for which Amara still looks upon Satsuma as an enemy. As retribution against the defiant Amara, the Satsuma warrior Shimazu Iehisa declares that he will have Ryuuzan removed from Ryuukyuu, and will send Shou Nei and the others up to Edo at the head of a procession, where they will be treated as an exhibition and ordered to dance the dances of Ryuukyuu, and that Agi and Ato will be sold to a troupe of traveling entertainers. Jana Rizan refuses to swear an oath of allegiance to Satsuma, to protect the pride of the people of Ryuukyuu, and is then forced to accept a sentence of decapitation. In order to save the hostages, Ryuuzan infiltrates Satsuma, where he crosses swords with the Satsuma warrior Akizuki Kazuma. During this, Kazuma senses Ryuuzan's spirit, and he lets Ryuuzan escape, and when Ryuuzan's presence is known, Rizan's sentence is carried out.

Ryuuzan and the others escape from Satsuma pursuit in the female kabuki troupe "Gokirakuza". The leader of the troupe, Kiraku Bouyuuza, is troubled, but the star of the troupe Komurasaki, and Yuuna (who ran away from Amami) smooth things over, and he hides Ryuuzan and the others.

Ryuuzan knows that the troupe has been called to a Satsuma banquet which the Ryuukyuu king will attend, and he begs to be allowed to come along, and they cooperate with him. Ryuuzan enters the banquet as one of the performers, and he meets with King Shou Nei amid the confusion of the dancers, but....
