Napoleon meets Josephine at the Paris Opera. She is older and has two children, and is also a terrible flirt. She calls him her pretty butterfly, and he falls for her. They get married soon after, but his traditional Sicilian family strongly disapproves. He goes off campaigning, but writes his wife letters every day. Letters she never reads or returns, until her son begs her to, because he admires his new father a lot.
They go to Egypt, where Napoleon finally has to admit that his wife is The World's Worst Flirt Ever when he catches her dancing a sexy dance with her old flame, Hippolyte. They argue.
Later, back in Paris, things aren't looking good for Napoleon as he gains more and more power, but his wife stands by him. His family arrives, and his mother refuses to acknowledge Josephine as Napoleon's wife. Josephine decides he'd be better without her, and declares they will be estranged. So after the crowning ceremony, they part.
The Russian campaign is a disaster. But Napoleon gets some quality time with his step-son and his old mentor, who tells him he wasn't wrong and he'll be forever remembered in history.
Josephine's old flame comes to visit her. She is in failing health. He begs her to make up with her husband, because he's always been in love with her, and wants her to be happy. He hadn't meant to admit that he had been in love with her, but once he says it he stands by his words. Still, Josephine says no.
Later, the verdict comes and Napoleon learns he's to be exiled to Elba. He returns to Paris to collect his wife, only to learn that she has died of an illness he heard nothing about. He is devastated, for his mother had finally given her forgiveness for their marriage, and nothing was going to come between them again. Cue her spirit and a wandering butterfly.
