I Won't Forget the Young Day's Song
At 16, the young samurai Maki Bunshirou is in love with Fuku, a daughter of another good family. He spends his year working in the court as a page, and also training in sword-work in the dojo. Then one day his father is caught up in a failed rebellion against the lord and disgraced. After his father commits ritual suicide to atone, Bunshirou's life becomes much darker as his family lives in shame. He is separated from Fuku, who is sent to the capital, Edo. Slowly, Bunshirou begins to regain an honorable position. Then he begins to hear rumors that Fuku has become a concubine of a lord in Edo...
(From the program)
Bunshiro is 16 years old. In the mornings he studies at a private school and every afternoon he practices his swordmanship at a fencing hall. Academically he is an average student but Bunshiro is a superb swordsman even though he is still very young. Sukezaemon, Bunshiro`s father, is actually his uncle. Sukezaemon had no children of his own so he adopted his nephew.
Bunshiro`s good friends, two sisters Fuku and Mitsu, live next door. Bunshiro treats the girls like they were his own sisters. Mitsu is still a child but Fuku who is 14 years old has fallen in love with Bunshiro. Bunshiro`s other friends, two boys Ippei and Yonosuke, know that BUnshiro feels the same way about Fuku.
Ippei is just an average student, academically and in fencing. His father passed away when he was very young. Ippei has taken over his father`s job in the castle and has assumed the role of head of his family. Ippei is well on the way to becoming a fine man.
Yonosuke has too slight a build for fencing but he is the top scholar in his class. he has decided to further his education in Edo.
Each of the three friends in doing his best in his own way. The friends cheer each other up and they are enjoying their youth together.
One day a strange thing happens. A group of men wielding spears runs through the town.
Takebe, the husband of Bunshiro`s older sister Rui, brings shocking news to Bunshiro`s family. Sukezaemon and some other have been accused of plotting against the government and arrested. The next day the prisoners are ordered to commit suicide in the ritual fashion> The families are given no explanation but one person from each family is allowed on visit. When Bunshiro meets his father Sukezaemon declares "I didn`t do anything to be ashamed of. I acted for the cause of righteousness. Never be ashamed of me, my son." Later Bunshiro regrets that he didn`t tell his father of his deep respect.
On the day of the suicide, harakiri, Bunshiro goes alone to bring his father`s body home. As he lifts his father`s body onto the car in the hot summer afternoon sun the coldness of people`s stares makes hi realized that he has been branded the song of a traitor. Fuku arrives and starts to pull the cart but Bunshiro tries to stop her. Everyone will think that Fuku`s family was in on the plot too. Fuku remembers only Sukezaemon`s kindess to her family. Fuku and Bunshiro pull the card home.
Two years later, Bunshiro still holds his samurai rank but his government salary has been cut. Bunshiro and mother Toyo, now live in poverty in a very run down house but Bunshiro has not given up daily fencing practice. One day Fuku visits but Bunshiro is at the fencing hall. Fuku tells Toyo that she wants to say goodbye because she is going to serve in the castle at Edo. Ippei sees her as she leaves the house. He realizes at ounce that she had come to see Bunshiro but it is too late.
In the castle the feudal lord finds Fuku attractive and she comes one of his minor wives.
Bunshiro`s fencing teacher admires the lad`s skill with the sword and respects him as a man as well. he teaches Bunshiro how to use "Murasame" a great sword. The teacher is an old man so he asks Kaji, a master swordman to instuct Bunshiro. it is the first time the teacher has invited a young student to learn the mysteries of the "Murasame".
Kaji holds an important position. He tells Bunshiro that he knows why Sukezaemon had to die. he also says that soon Bunshiro`s salary and his father`s rank will be restored. But because of a certain reason for all of this, Kaji advises Bunshiro not to be too happy about this news.
Some time later just as Kaji said Bunshiro is appointed to a position at the local castle. Prosperous again, he is able to marry.
Fuku returns to her hometown from Edo. Everyone is told that another minor wide of the feudal lord, Fune, was so jealous of Fuku that she had somehow forced her out of the castle at Edo. But in fact, the feudal lord himself arranged for Fuku to return home. she is going to have the feudal lord`s baby and the feudal lord is concerned for their safety. Fune is also the mother of a child of the feudal lord. The rivalry in the catle over which of the lord`s children will become the next lord is intense and vicious. In fact, Bunshiro`s father was involved in a plot to make Fune`s son the next lord in place of the feudal lord`s official wife`s son. At that time, Satomura, a powerful courtier, forced the feudal lord`s official wife out of the castle.
Satomura is still supporting Fune and her child. He plans to kill Fuku and her son. Satomura discovers that Fuku has returned to her hometown to give birth. Satomura decides to use Fuku`s old friend Bunshiro as a lure but Bunshiro finds out what the courtier is up to. Bunshiro and Ippei rush to protect Fuku. When the attackers break into the house Ippei holds them off while Bunshiro leads Fuku and the baby to safety.
The feudal lord is enraged and punishes Satomura. Peace returns to the castle.
One year later Bunshiro receives a letter from Fuku. She tells him that the feudal lord has passed away. She has decided to become a nun but she she would like to see him. She is waiting near by. Bunshiro rushes off to meet Fuku. Even though Bunshiro and Fuku have lived very different lives they enjoy talking about when they were young together. They now realize they were in love with each other. it is too late to regret that they didn`t marry. It is enough for them to find happiness in their memories.
