During the 1930s in Europe many people were leading dissolute lives in a political climate that had been unsettled by wars, rebellions, famines and the growth of Fascism.

The hero of this tale is Oscar, a man of noble Russian birth. Oscar, a member of the once ruling Romanov family, fled his homeland in the wake of the revolution. He lost not only his fortune but his home, his ancestral title and his family.

In the depths of despair he finds a spiritual reawakening from his miserable existence. Oscar's new philosophic view of life is, "I have lost everything. There is nothing left to lose. I myself, am my homeland. I myself, am my fortune. I will find whatever I need within myself."

In the brightness of his newly found freedom from mundane concerns, Oscar's warmth, gentleness and broadmindedness attract a band of his fellows who have shared similar losses and the accompanying despair. They look to Oscar as their natural leader and he welcomes all.

Oscar becomes a magician and his followers, the members of a circus. With the circus as a most convenient front, they rob the rich and powerful Fascist bourgeois and then distribute the spoils to the needy.

One day, a ring, an ancient heirloom of the Romanovs, is sold at an auction. The successful bidder, the Fascist Governor-General, presents it to his love, Sophia.

Unknown to the Governor-General, the ring bears a secret inscription which tells the location of the hidden Romanov fortune. Oscar and his band are determined to rob the beautiful Sophia of the Romanov ring.

Taking advantage of an upheaval in the town, Oscar first wins the friendship of Berger, one of the Governor-General's personal guards, next the confidence of Sophia's brother Angelo who is plotting the Governor-General's assassination, and finally the love of Sophia herself.

And so it comes to pass that the merry band of circus performers set off to seek the lost treasures of the Romanovs.

A splendid overture opens the show. Gypsy travellers from a far-off moon gently land in a desert. The dry land reverberates with glorious songs and dances.

A youth explores the remote reaches of India. He wanders in a mysterious world and fully indulges himself in its sensual pleasures. Love grows little by little until the perfect climax is attained. A gypsy group scatters into all corners of the sky. The youth goes in search of a loving Indian maiden and a fire bird.

A youth, Le Gitan, journeys with his family peacefully until a wanderer, Le Dari, arrives on the scene bringing antagonism and hatred. Their once joyful world is now full of sorrow and bloodshed. Le Gitan and his family disappear from this world. Souls drift up into the sky. The red blood is replaced by white flowers.

In front of countless burning candles people crowd in to offer prayers. Gypsy folk from all corners of the globe gather to sing and dance. The excitement of the festival builds to a moving climax.
