The play is set in the Asuka period (592 - 710 CE). In Korea, the kingdom of Baekje was being invaded by the kingdom of Silla. Empress Saimei (Gokyoku) of Yamato decided to give military aid to Baekje to save the kingdom. Upon leaving Nigitatsu, an excerpt of the Manyoshu rings in her heart. The army of Yamato arrives and joins the battle of Hakusukinoe (Baekgang). Why did the Empress choose to fight?
Years ago before the battle, Chishaku, a scholar from Baekje, decided to come to Yamato to study Buddhism. He opens up a study hall and meets a young lady from Yamato named Takara no Himemiko. Takara no Himemiko is who will be known as Empress Saimei. Takara, who lost her son and had a divorce with her husband, studied earnestly at the hall, and the wounds of her heart were healed by Chishaku. Although the two were attracted to each other and fell in love, they were trapped in a whirlpool of history.
The Soga clan trying to expand power to Baekje, Empress Suiko trying to protect the country from the Soga clan, Prince Tamura (soon-to-be Emperor Jomei) secretly thinking of Takara… In the midst of the tides of history, Chishaku and Takara are torn apart. As Chishaku lost the person he loved, what was he thinking and how did he live?
A saga that history never told of a young man from Baekje, based on an excerpt of the Manyoshu.
