Summary

WARNING!! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!

The struggling musician Grand Pa meets the runaway Lu when she manages to sneak off with his breakfast through the kitchen window. He meets her again later, and takes her in. At first everyone thinks Lu is a boy, but when the filthy runaway is forced to take a bath, Grand Pa's young friend Jerry accidently stumbles upon the truth. The cheerful Lu doesn't speak much, though she begins to come out of her shell around Grand Pa. She has no parents, she tells him. Grand Pa is an orphan too. His parents died when he was 15, and his grandmother raised him after that. She also passed away.

One day, while walking along the beach in Miami, Lu and Grand Pa bump into a visitor who thinks he recognizes Lu. He decides he must be mistaken, when Grand Pa tells him she's his younger brother. The man then helps Grand Pa when Jerry gets a flesh would from someone taking pot shots at strangers. The man is a doctor, named Vespard.

Grand Pa works to help Lu come out of her shell, and eventually gets her to sing on the stage of the Moles Hole. Her voice is beautiful, but after a marvelous song, she collapses. She refuses to let Grand Pa take her to see a doctor. He reluctantly agrees, but then goes in search of the Dr. Vespard. After a short conversation, Vespard coaxes the information out of Grand Pa. In return, he explains that he remembers Lu from when he was called to France a year previous to look at the only daughter of a rich couple there. Lucienne Klee's condition can't be treated, he tells Grand Pa.

When Grand Pa confronts Lu with the truth, she runs away with his old friend and current rival Jackson. When Grand Pa learns that Jackson will be having Lu sing he is concerned, and tells his ex-guitarist Naze (whom Jackson also lured away from Grand Pa) to keep a close eye on her.

Meanwhile, Dr. Vespard has contacted Lu's parents. They fly in from France, and Grand Pa takes them to see their daughter as she is performing. They interrupt her set, and she runs away again. Grand Pa goes after her.

They talk, and Grand Pa begins to understand why she ran away from the parents who love her. He tells her parents she doesn't want to see them, or return to France. He urges them to let her live, and to sing. In the end, they agree, and leave Lu in his care.

Grand Pa promises Lu he won't forget her, just as he never forgets the many world-traveling friends who come into and out of his life. She makes him promise to remember her as if she'll come back again someday....
