Summary

WARNING!! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!

The story follows Shakespeare's original fairly closely, with a few exceptions. It is set in a pseudo-modern world.

It starts with an angel coming out to play in an old church, and discovering signs of vandalism and disuse. S/he also finds an old book, and after puzzling through it, reads the intro dialogue. Then the angel is dumped out into a city where crime and murder are rampant, and it looses its wings and voice in the middle of a scuffle between the Montagues and Capulets. It takes shelter with Father Lawrence. The prince takes the form of a disembodied voice which warns both the Capulets and the Montagues to cease their quarreling.

From here the familiar play takes shape. We meet Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio, who go to attend the Capulet's masquerade. There Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love. At the masquerade, we begin to suspect that Paris is a jealous man. He sends Tybalt after Romeo.

Romeo and Juliet have their famous balcony scene, then Juliet sends Nurse to meet Romeo for the time of their secret wedding. Nurse is not fond of Mercutio and his cruel teasing, but takes Romeo's message back to Juliet.

After the wedding, Romeo tries to stop the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio, and Mercutio dies. Romeo kills Tybalt in a fury. He is pronounced banished from the city, and so only gets one short night with his new wife. He flees to Veronna.

Meanwhile, Juliet's father orders her to mary Paris, and so Father Laurence gives her the medicine which will make her appear dead and sends word to Romeo. But the letter never reaches him, only the rumor that Juliet is dead. Romeo buys poison and goes to Juliet's tomb. There he runs into Paris. He tries to diffuse the situation, but Paris forces him to draw his sword. The two fight, and Paris dies. Romeo drinks his poison and dies as well. Poor Juliet wakes up to discover two corpses in her tomb, and promptly takes her own life to join Romeo.

Faced with the consequences of their quarrel, the Capulets and the Montagues make peace.
