Hanakosode
Sanzaburo Nagoya gives up his rank as a samurai at the death of his lord.
He was the best warrior with the spear in all of Japan and he fought with distinction in the Sekigahara War. Caring little for military glory he sets out from his hometown of Gamo and roams throughout the country.
Sanzaburo meets and joins the Nenbutsu-odori, a dance troupe. He performs Kabuki dance with the leader of the group, Okuni. Because of this he gains fame, once again much against his will. He had wanted to live quietly doing humble tasks, so once again he decides to become a wanderer and he leaves the troup with his apprentices Fuemaru and Tsubaki.
In the autumn of the same year he meets the two brothers Ujinobu and Motonobu and their sister Kikyo. The two brothers had tried to succeed to the leadership of the Konparu School of Japanese dance, but they were defeated in a competition for the right to assume leadership. Discouraged and downhearted, they are about to give up completely and run away to any place where they are unknown. After listening to their tale, Sanzaburo wants to help them develop their full potential as dancers and to reach the top rank.
However, he finds it very difficult to continue to aid them because of outside demands for his services. Okuni's troupe wants Sanzaburo back.
Sanzaburo does not worry about the interference at all and he doubles his efforts and increases the discipline of the training schedule. The two pupils work hard and finally the great day comes when they are ready.
