Black Rose of the Desert
Long, long ago, in the palace of the Arabian kingdom of Balk, the third year anniversary of the death of Queen Zobeida falls on the night of a full moon. King Hassan invites Marianna, the princess of the neighboring Shazenan Kingdom, to a feast. At this feast, King Hassan announces that Queen Zamira of his harem shall thereafter be his highest wife. After losing his mother, Zobeida's son Alishar has sadly roamed many lands, but he returns to the palace unexpectedly the day before the feast. Queen Zamira's son, Prince Harun, is honestly pleased at the return of his half-brother. As children, Prince Alishar and Princess Marianna had been betrothed, but Queen Zamira had decided upon Marianna as her own son's bride, and polished her plan through the secret involvement of Vizier Kashim. Moreover, they plot to take over the kingdom of Balk. However, Prince Alishar has blown in with an exotic wind, becoming drunk at the banquet and ending up fooling about with the members of the Baharul Jesters who were providing the evening's entertainment. Among those jesters is a wanderer and skilled singer called Yawan. Yawan and the troupe dancer Miska have become a famed pair. The troupe master Baharul hopes that the two will join together in truth someday, but they are forever quarreling.
It is around this time that the phantom thief "The Black Rose" appears out of the desert like the wind, famed for stealing from the rich to give to the poor. A princess flees to the back streets where the Black Rose's supporters hang out. She is Princess Marchina of the kingdom of Korasan, which was tricked by Kashim and perished in the fires of war. The Black Rose gives Princess Marchina into the custody of the Baharul Troupe, whom he is already acquainted with. Vizier Kashim's men come flying in upon them in pursuit. At the height of the confusion, Yawan and Marchina come face to face for an instant, and are wrapped in deep astonishment. Yawan is the alias under which Prince Aziz of Korasan has been concealing himself. In that brief moment of joyful reunion, the two are recaptured by Kashim's underlings. And then the Black Rose of the Desert and Zelim (the best swordsman of Korasan who has been searching for Princess Marchina) creep into the underground temple in which the two have been locked away by Kashim.....
