The impoverished aristocrat Florestan must marry an heiress or end up in debtor's prison. He is engaged to Hélène, whom he has never met. One day in a flower shop Hélène overhears Florestan complaining to his latest mistress about the arranged marriage and decides to teach him a lesson. She and her aunt Ermerance assume names (Hélène choses Véronique) and take jobs working at the flower shop.
Florestan eventually falls in love with Véronique/Hélène, and she runs away, leaving him a letter. Later, Hélène learns that Florestan has been thrown into prison and pays his debts for him. Florestan is very surprised to see who is waiting for him at the altar...
