This is a tale set in 19th century Italy, of an orphan raised in a noble family who goes off to fight for his country.
Albert is a young man raised by the Venitian nobleman Giovanni Valdi.
Albert returns to Venice for the spring festival and is reunited with Giovanni's daughter Sofia. An Austrian army commander named Werner also appears on the scene, and proposes to Sofia.
Albert, inspired by a friend who was killed by Austrain troupes, becomes involved with the independence movement, looking to free Venice from Austrian control and return it to self-rule.
Albert is arrested by Werner and exiled for treason. In order to overturn Albert's sentencing, Sofia agrees to marry Werner.
Vowing revenge, Albert returns to Venice and infiltrates a gambling den. There he meets a beautiful woman named Juliana....
