The Great Gatsby
In 1922 the most fashionable suburb in New York was West Egg on Long Island. The talk of the town among the upper class families was the parties Jay Gatsby threw at his West Egg mansion.
Nick Carraway, a stock-broker, moved into the house next to Gatsby`s estate. One night Nick went to a party at Gatsby`s. The party was lively and gay. Nick was surprised that the carefree party goers neither knew nor cared who he was. As Nick made his way home just before dawn he found Gatsby gazing in the direction of East Egg on the other side of the bay. Later that morning when Nick was about to leave home for the office he noticed that Gatsby is still out on the pier staring across the waters. Nick breaks Gatsby`s reverie and introduces himself, Gatsby replies with the impressive history of his own career. There is no sign that Gatsby is troubled until Nick mentions that he knows some peple who live across the bay where Jay is looking.
Gatsby is obviously taken aback when Nick mentioned that one of his second cousins, Daisy, lives in East Egg with her husband, Tom Buchanan, who was a classmate of Nick`s at Yale.
Sometime later Nick visits his old college buddy, Tom. One of Daisy`s closest friends, Jordon Baker, a professional golfer, tells Nick that both Tom is fascinated by the woman, Myrtle Wilson, Myrtle is quite unlike her honest, solid citizen husband who is obsessed with automobiles. While chatting with his cousin Nick casually mentioned his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Daisy was startled to hear Nick speak of Jay, her first love.
In 1917 when the USA was in the world war in Europe, Daisy Gay, an eighteen year old renowned was the most beautiful girl in all of Kentucky, first met Jay at a reception held at the Gay mansion. Daisy and First Lieutenant Gatsby fell in love at first sight.
A month later Jay came to meet Daisy. Their conversation was interrupted by Daisy`s parents who took their daughter back inside the house. Elisabeth Fay, Daisy`s mother, had probed Gatsby`s background and found that he was not a suitable match for her eldest daughter. Elisabeth said "Rich girls don`t marry poor boys." labeling Gatsby a fortune hunter and told him to leave her child alone. Daisy tried to sneak out of the house but her mother was ready for that plot. later on, Daisy was married to a wealthy businessman from Chicago, Tom Buchannan. Daisy wrote to Jay over the years but never received a reply.
One evening Gatsby told Nick the same story. They were in a speakeasy called the Ice Castle. Gatsby had introduced Nick to Wolfshiem, the man who had put Jay on the road to success when he had come home form the way. After Jay told Nick about his love for Daisy he begged Nick to arrange a meeting that would make it appear Daisy and Jay had met by chance.
A few days later, Nick incited his cousin to his home where Daisy found Gatsby waiting with a bouquet of white roses. Gatsby took Nick and Daisy to his own home. There, Daisy at once realized from Gatsby`s room that there was a perfect view of her home across the bay. She knew what i meant. Gatsby still loved her. All of Daisy`s old feelings for Jay blazed to the heights of former passion.
At a party at Gatsby`s, Tom suspicious of the relationship between the host and his wife, confronts Daisy. Gatsby steps in to protect her from the accusations. Buchanan not satisfied, decides to investigate Gatsby`s past and present circumstances.
