1920s England during the post WWI economic depression. In the southwest of England, the ancient Roman spa town of Bath, with its long history as a destination for the upper classes to go for health and rejuvenation, is also suffering from the sluggish economy. Alex Cunningham is a Vaudevillian working at Bath’s small music hall, the Palladium. He strives to soften the hearts of the weary visitors to the town by presenting them with laughter and enjoyment.

One day, Alex meets Gino Rossi, a mendicant bicycle repairman who has been working in Italy and resents his family with murderous intent, and Barbara Daedalus, a volunteer nurse who is visiting Bath. For the first time Alex must face his own grandfather’s life.

Barbara finds a “red stone” that Gino drops. Alex may be able to help Gino with a “dream” that he had one time when he was in an accident. As these two relationships unravel, Alex digs up his buried past and circumstances veer towards an unexpected conclusion. Has everything in Alex’s life been mere chance? But with the red stone…has Alex’s late grandfather been guiding him towards these inevitable events?
