First off I really liked the introductary music; very jazzy. The stage is bright and shy. Of course I got a bit thrown off when a Miki Akio(?) introduced herself to the public. I was soon distacted by Mami's disembodied singing. She then entered the stage dressed in a long white trench coat and fedora. I was already grinning. To sweeten the deal not long after Taatan appeared in a long *blue* trenchcoat and fedora. Apparently, the choreographers didn't think Mami and Taatan were enough. Several more otokoyaku joined in dressed in baby blue versions. Gaichi was among them. This is a very good way to start off a revue.
They soon disapear and some musumeyaku slink on in dresses that look supiciously familiar (Cocktail?). Not that I had much time to contemplated them as Mami returned in sparkly tux with pink trimmings...oh why pink? At least they do not look as bad as the ones in Naked City. Mami's voice is absolute gold.
Two otokoyaku pretending to play trumpets set the mood for the next number. It made me giggle. Yet, I was not prepared as Taatan walked on stage in a pure white suit, slicked back hair and singing an angsty jazz tune moving her hips like a pro. I could watch this woman dance all day. Especially since she later on takes off the suit jacket and contiunes dancing to drum heavy music.
The otokoyaku appear again playing saxaphones. Now... may I please be those instruments? The way they feel the saxs up... Mami distracted me again as she appears in shiny pleather, sunglasses and scary jrock hair. I bet she uses windex on those pants... I am not going to finish that. So, Mami is singing this jazzy rock song and then pulls a gun out. I am having flashbacks to LUNA. Several otokoyaku appear on stage dressed in dark suits, fedoras and very big guns. Holy! Oh specifically Gaichi in a dark red suit, fedora and big gun. The music goes from semi jazzy to trancelike? Mami decended onto the stage with several musumeyaku in blood red frocks. She was still in shiny pleather. Mami danceda with them for a bit then turns her attention to one of them. They have this lovely pair dance and then BAM! Favored musuemyaku is suddenly riddled with bullets. Mami procceds to angst while the music turns rockish. ACK Now my flash backs are of Kill Bill as Mami goes nuts on the other otokoyaku in fedoras. She sing throatily and fires a lazer gun. I have dubbed this number KILL LUNA. Doesn't have quite the same ring.
The severity of the previous number is diffused by Baby Kiriyan and Tani!!! Kiriyan is in white and Tani in black with several coordinating musumeyaku in bowler hats and heels. Taatan comes in a black tux doing what she does best... being gorgeous. Dan-chan appears in a really lovely white dress and parasol. First sighting I've had of her. Oh it was very brief sighting. She didn't sound so bad. Mami returns in sparkly siver. This number seems slightly anticlimatic compared to the previous action packed number. Not that listening to Mami sing is a -bad- thing. Oh yes not a bad thing at all.
Gaichi finally gets a solo! For a bit before Taatan joins her. Mami then decides to join the fun. A very sparkly group number.
Mami then is left alone singing a song that sounds verrrrry familar but I cannot place it! Oh Dan-chan comes in a lovely black frock. Aww they are so adorable together. Mami drowns Dan out. *g* Mami sneaks in a kiss and gives an OK sign to the audiance.
Kiriyan comes on and does a cute little number, before Taatan and several other otokoyaku in WWII military uniforms kill me. They all sing and act silly. Of course what WWII number is complete without musumeyaku in brightly coloured WWII era frocks to greet thier hard working otokoyaku? Taatan seems to have no partner. She searches desperatly! Oh wait... but an unfamiliar musumeyaku comes and greets Taatan! This number is cavity inducing as they dance and gaze into each other's eyes. They sing a song that is very familiar but I cannot place the name of it. It is going to bother me for a while
Tani then comes on in uniform acting silly. Mami follows dressed in a rich blue suit singing an angsty solo. An angsty subtle latin beat solo! The set lights up and reveals a sort of club? Mami is instantly captivated by Dan-chan in dark red. Who wouldn't be? Dan-chan seemed to have done a very through job of seducing Mami. But wait! Apparently some other otokoyaku are unhappy with this. They wisk Dan-chan away. Some musumeyaku try to console Mami, but alas... she only has eyes for Dan. We return to her angsty solo. Mami seems to be having rather bad luck with musumeyaku durring this revue.
Next number opens with baby moons ,I do not reconise, singing cutely. The cuteness is ruined by Mami & Co in suits stolen from NEW OSK's Dandy. For those that do not know what I am taking about... they are wearing suits with a silver of a drastically different colour on the side of the suit or on the arm. It amkes me wonder if did they not have enough fabric of one colour to finish it? At least Dan is in one colour.. pale lavender.
Now, I am unhappy as this was the last number of the revue. There was no pair dance! Dan-chan had a very small role in this... very small. Had I a choice, Mami would have changed out of that horrendous suit and back in classic sparkly black and joined Dan for a pair dance. But alas, they went into the parade. But hey! We catch glimpses of Yuuhi, Kiriyan, Tani and Touko?! Then Gachi in toothpaste blue. Taatan in sparkly blue and white blue tipped feathers. Dan in a fluffy white dress and feathers. And finally Mami in traditional sparkly white tails, dixiland(?) hat and black tipped feathers. Oh did i mention they have toy trombones instead of flowers? Mami was having too much fun with those feathers as she kept sashying them dangrously around the stage. I swore she was going to knock someone off!
Everyone was top notch. Despite the singing was dominated by three stars, the singing was good. What was best everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves and putting thier all into the dancing
Just as the revue name states, the music was predominatly jazz like. Overall it wasn't memorable but it fit well through out the revue. There was no akward transition.
The staging was very simple, consisting only of lights and the occasional special effect. I thought it suited the revue very well since the actresses were the main focus. Had the staging been extravagant it would overload people's senses.
Overall, I really loved this revue. I thought it was very well balanced and flowed seamlessly. The music was very enjoyable and there were no truly frightinging costumes. The purple and white ones are an outlier. Mami's singing was top notch and we got plenty of eye candy with Taatan and Gaichi. There also some occasional cutness with several then Baby Moons. I always love seeing the now big stars as babies. I have to say my favorite part was the dancing. Moon Troupe always seems to have excellent dancing in thier revues. Some numbers were slightly predicitable and others seemed like a foershadowing of future revues. All in all... very good revue!
