Musical
The Radio Prince: Edward VIII ~The Love that Cost the Crown~
The setting is Britain in 1972. The funeral for the Duke of Windsor, the former King of England Edward VIII, is taking place at Saint George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Describing the scene is Guy Burgess of the British Broadcasting Corporation. He is talking about Wallis, the Duchess of Windsor, who has sunk into profound sadness. "Love that cost the crown." Edward VIII had earlier abdicated as King to realize his love for Wallis. Wallis wipes her tears. Just as she starts telling the reporters around her about her sadness over the loss of her beloved husband, a voice is heard on the radio that claims her tears are false. Ignoring the sense of surprise around her, Wallis turns to a radio, and angrily utters the word "David," the name of her late husband.
It's the beginning of the 20th century. David, a member of Britain's Royal Family and Crown Prince, is hugely popular, having earned the public's enormous support for his friendly character and modern sensibility. One night, he visits a nightclub accompanied by the newspaper reporter Bruce Lockhart and the Astaire brother-and-sister dance team. David sneaks behind the back of another of his companions, Secretary Godfrey Thomas, and disappears with a woman called Marguerite.
In a hotel room, David becomes caught up in a disturbance caused by Marguerite, who is under the misapprehension that she would become a princess if she were to marry him, despite the fact she is already married. But thanks to the efforts of the statesman Winston Churchill, the government makes an agreement with the media so that the newspapers will hush up the incident. Meanwhile, David entertains thoughts of meeting a woman who will love him merely as a man, not because he is the Prince of Wales.
Yet an endless stream of people comes to his home, aiming to exploit his popularity. One such person is Wallis, who has been waiting for the chance to get to know David. Her husband Ernest is keen to use the popularity of the Prince of Wales to help rehabilitate the trading company he manages, and so he asks his wife to approach David. But on her first chance to speak with him, she recoils at the Crown Prince, who assumes that people act out of self-interest. Wallis returns home without the favor being granted.
The wedding day arrives for David's younger brother, George, the Duke of Kent. A large crowd of spectators has gathered outside the grounds of Westminster Abbey. It is there that Wallis accidentally finds out that her husband has been cheating on her. David emerges from the abbey and recognizes Wallis, who is in a daze over the news, and begins talking to her. King George V spots the two together and asks Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin to look into Wallis's background.
A Jubilee Ball is held at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reign of George V. David shows up with Wallis, although none of the other guests bother to exchange greetings with her. Furthermore, David is told by the King to send Wallis home. Refusing the instruction, David takes the hand of Wallis, who has been feeling the pressure to leave, and unexpectedly, the pair casually starts to dance. He opens himself up to her, and after they leave the ball, David tells her what is on his mind - that he wants her to see him merely as a man, not as the Crown Prince. Wallis is entranced by David, even though she is aware of the enormity of the barrier separating them.
Even so, the likelihood is around zero that the British people would approve of a marriage between the Prince of Wales, the future King, and a foreign wife with a history of divorce. Time ticks on….Eventually, George V passes away, and the day arrives when David will become Edward VIII.
