sanbante (三番手): literally, "third-ranked player"

Sanbante refers to the third-ranked otokoyaku star in a troupe. Depending on the popularity of the star and inner politics of the troupe, a sanbante may become nibante and eventually a top star. However, this is not always the case and she may not stay in the same troupe. Some troupes may not have a clearly chosen sanbante.
