Act I ~ Yezo Lily of the Valley

In 1189, Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men who were staying in Northern Fujiwara were suddenly attacked by Fujiwara no Yasuhira. Yoshitsune, following Kichiji's advice, used Sagime Kotarou as a substitute, and escaped safely along with Fujiwara no Tadahira to Yezo. Meanwhile, Lady Shizuka, who had been mad with grief, learns that Yoshitsune is still alive and reunites with him in Yezo.

In the Yezo village of Usappu he is dependent upon the goodwill of Charenka, but because he refused her and her sister's love, he is driven out yet again. Osaya helps Yoshitsune and his party to escape, but she and her son are shot with arrows and die. Yoshitsune is cornered and his boat burned, but Charenka has a change of heart and drives away the Ainu men.

Yoshitsune is prepared to die, but in a narrow escape he finds a boat while searching the tomb of a king, and sets out for the continent. However, they encounter a storm. Satisfied in Yoshitsune's love for her, Lady Shizuka throws herself into the sea, which quells the sea god's anger and calms the storm.

Act II ~ Dust Clouds of Iris

1194, five years have passed since Yoshitsune's party came to the mainland. Yoshitsune has gained popularity and brought together the Mongols, and now heads an army of 800 soldiers. Yoshitsune has the Song Empire as his aim, but first must pass through the Jin Empire. However, the Jin prime minister Kangan Shouki fears Yoshitsune's military might and leadership, and harasses him. Chou Eikun deals with this and receives Yoshitsune favorably.

Eikun and Shouki's antagonism is clear to see, and actually there has been talk of a planned coup d'etat. The slave girl Khan was captivated by Shouki with his flute, as by a demon, and ordered to kill Yoshitsune. That night when she quietly draws close to Yoshitsune, whom Eikun has persuaded to spend the night in the palace, Khan recognizes a deep love she still possesses and lifts her veil to reveal her face.

...Khan is Lady Shizuka, who fell in the sea and changed her name. She says that more than protecting her virtue, she wanted to be reunited with Yoshitsune. Yoshitsune asks her to come with him to Song. But the brief moment of joy is transient, and Khan commits suicide without regret.

Yoshitsune learns from the slave woman Tefu that Eikun is actually friendly with Shouki, but it's when he learns that he prostituted Khan that they have a showdown. But during the battle Eikun tells his true intention of planned suicide. He says that he seemed to go along with Shouki's plans in order to protect the emperor. He dies entrusting the emperor to Yoshitsune and apologizing for Shizuka.

The moment Yoshitsune leaves for Song the Mongol army is attacked by Shouki, putting him in a predicament. He goes to free the king and returns. Then he loudly declares: "From this day forth I am a Mongol, and my name is Genghis Khan."
