In Edo during the Tenmei Era (late 18th Century), a young man who is heir to a samurai family runs away from home and becomes a fiction novelist. Hayato leaves his inheritance for his younger brother Shinjirou, leaves his lover Yae behind and flees the family house. While wandering the streets of the artists' part of town he comes to know Kimika and befriends her brother Juurobee. Hayato and Juurobee both would love to make art. However, Juurobee's lover has been sold by her family to the red light district to pay off a debt and he is at his wits end. Hayato persuades Juurobee to begin training under ukiyoe artist Kitagawa Utamaro. The two publish a work that criticizes the shogunate....
