Farewell, My Youth
Set in vineyards along the Danube near Vienna, Austria. The wise owner and master of the vineyards is Gregory Werner, who the people in the area respect. His eldest son Otto is honest and hard-working, and engaged to the local girl Sylvia. He is expected to inherit his father's lands.
The second son Franz refuses to help at the vineyard and spends everyday with his no-good friends.
Gregory buys a new wine press, which unfortunately breaks down. The family is driven to bankruptcy.
Learning of the danger to the family, Franz becomes busy in his own way. Although he doesn't even have 10 shillings to rub together, he determines to request work at Karen's wine shop. Karen had seemed an unprepossessing wine shop madam, but actually she is a very refined woman. She is also, secretly, Otto and Franz's mother.
Karen sees through Franz's reckless front to the kind heart he has inside. She knows Franz would do anything to help his father, and gives him 100,000 shillings, telling him she does not want him to repay her.
But Gregory gives honor more weight than character, and stubbornly refuses the money. Not only that, but he accuses Franz of having stolen it.
Believing his father hates him and wouldn't shed a tear if he died, Franz takes his brother's sports car and drives to Vienna with a reckless speed. He doesn't realize he's approaching the dangerous valley road....
One Boy
