Sangorou, son of a noodle shop owner, spends all of his time loafing about doing nothing. He disregards the advice of his father, who can't bear to see his son wasting his life.

Nobuyoshi the newspaperman tells him he should try being a soldier of fortune and loans him a costume and rusty sword. Sangorou, who thinks being a soldier of fortune makes him more of a man, soon finds himself in a quarrel with an Edo gangster named Gonbei before he realizes it.

One day, Sangorou becomes acquainted with the courtesan Takamado Taiyuu, and hears her unhappy life story. Hearing it, he soon finds himself helping her to get her revenge....
