This arrangement of the War and Peace novel begins about half-way through book two, with the temporary truce brookered between Russia and France. Pierre has already married and become estranged from Hélène, and Prince Andrei's wife Lise has already passed away.
The action of the musical opens at Natasha's first grand ball, where through Pierre's kindness she meets and dances with Prince Andrei, and the two fall in love. In short time Prince Andrei returns to his father's home to talk with his father about marrying Natasha. His father urges caution, particularly when his many absences have already left the burden of raising Prince Andrei's son on his sister's shoulders. Prince Andrei and Natasha thus begin a secret (from society), year-long engagement, and Prince Andrei promises the young Natasha that if she changes her mind or falls in love with another man throughout that year, she is free to break the engagement.
Prince Andrei and Natasha's older brother Nikolai depart for the battle field once more, as Napoleon invades Russia. Nikolai must say farewell to his cousin Sonya, whom he has promised to marry.
Natasha visits the opera with her family, where she meets the dissolute Hélène and her brother Anatole Kuragin. The two begin a secret affair, and Natasha's cousin Sonya brings a letter she has discovered to Pierre to seek his advice. Together, they prevent Natasha from eloping. Pierre finds Anatole at his wife's salon and confronts him, extracting his promise not to make the affair known to society. Hélène mocks Pierre, who realizes for the first time that he loves Natasha.
Pierre then meets Natasha and breaks the news to her that Kuragin is already married, and never meant to marry her. Natasha is devastated, not least of all because she has already written to tell Prince Andrei of her decision to elope with Anatole. Pierre makes an attempt to renew the betrothal between Natasha and Prince Andrei, but the prince refuses. On the eve of battle, expecting to die, he admits to Natasha's brother Nikolai that what he really cannot forgive was his own hope and expectations, at his age, for the love of such a young girl.
General Kutuzov, the Russian commander-in-chief, makes several unpopular decisions that anger his emperor and soldiers. He withdraws from Napoleon's superior forces, burning the countryside so that the French army will have no provisions, and abandoning Moscow to the French army. After the city has emptied, it is torched by the Russians themselves.
Withdrawing to an estate outside of Moscow, the Rostovs also bring with them a badly wounded Prince Andrei. Natasha decides to devote the rest of her life to taking care of the prince and nursing him back to health. They watch Moscow burn. Prince Andrei regains consciousness, but refuses to speak to or acknowledge Natasha. Meanwhile, due to overcrowding at the nearby field hospital, the Rostovs take in more wounded soldiers. One of these soldiers is Kuragin, whom Natasha also nurses.
The French arrive in Moscow, astounded to find it in ruins. The soldiers, who had fought so hard to see the famed city, are disheartened. Napoleon and his officers worry about the approaching winter.
Kuragin regains his health, though not full mobility of his leg. He and his friends answer a call to arms. Pierre also decides to go to the battlefield, to do what he can, parting from Natasha with the mysterious words: "If I should return alive...."
The first snow of the year is late, and heralded with joy by the tsar and consternation by Napoleon. General Kutuzov finally moves onto the offensive. The Rostovs are outside seeing the soldiers off as the snow begins to fall, and Prince Andrei emerges, supported by his sister. He has been waiting, fighting to live, so that he could see the snow fall. He absolves Natasha of any blame, telling her he loves her, and there is nothing to forgive. He tells her she has made him very happy, and asks her to live on, for him. He dies quietly.
