France, 1644. Louis XIII has been dead for one year, and Queen Anne d'Autriche has the regency in lieu of her young son, Louis XIV. Several strong figures stand in her court, and the intrigue and infighting remains a problem. Cardinal Mazarin, chief minister of France, is one of them, as is Gaston, duc d'Orléans, brother-in-law of Anne. The court is celebrating a victory against the Germans, and the general, Louis II, Duke of Enghien's successful return.

Suddenly a masked troubadour appears and begins singing. His songs are politically charged against the continuing Thirty Year's War, and Mazarin orders him to stop. When he refuses the Imperial Guard attempt to arrest him. Instead, this one man manages to take down twenty, steal a sword, and hold it to the queen's throat. Anne begins to laugh, and demands that Julian remove his mask. The court is relieved and joyful to see that the former commander of the Imperial Guard has returned to Paris. Suddenly a new disturbance runs into the ballroom, a young man begging to speak to the queen. Princess Charlotte begs the queen to listen to him, as he is her father's servant. The young man, Lazlo, has come to beg the queen's aide to protect Alsace, which is being ravaged by both French and German troupes because of its precarious location. At first the queen wavers, but Mazarin talks her around despite Julian's protests, and the unlucky Lazlo is dragged off to the Bastille while Charlotte weeps.

Julian leaves the court, his servant Branche following and muttering about how he always manages to get into the thick of trouble. Julian protests that he walks a very straight path, and trouble just happens to ambush him. He eventually ends up at a deserted theater, and is surprised to see all the men gone. The women tell him that actors and singers have been arrested lately for unfavorable views. He calls out for his old friends, and they come running: the three musketeers. Although old and infirm, they swear to follow him wherever he asks. Unfortunately, he asks about the Bastille, which Athos broke out of 40 years before. They waver, but are eventually talked around for a daring rescue attempt.

At the Bastille, Athos manages to remember the path in and they free Lazlo. Another man in the cell calls out, wondering if he might be permitted to escape as well, since the door is already open. This is Michele, a real troubadour, thrown into prison for espousing politically charged beliefs. Julian agrees to free him and all of the other prisoners. They reconvene back at the theater, where Julian warns them that staying in Paris isn't safe. He asks for their help, because he has a plan to save Alsace. All the men agree, except one. Lounging in a corner, a man with a livid scar on his cheek says a polite thank you for the rescue, but adds that since he's not a political prisoner like the rest, he intends to go on as he always has. Julian notes that he is no regular thief, and he admits to being Manderen, a name everyone recognizes. Suddenly his girlfriend appears and calls his bluff, and he agrees to help Julian as well.

In Riquewhir, Alsace, the Marquis Flovel and his wife prepare for the worst. His wife tells her two sons that starting tomorrow they will go to enlist, one in the German army, the other in the French. That way at least one will survive on the winning side. The family weeps, when suddenly Lazlo appears with news. Although the queen has refused her aide, he has brought the former captain of the Imperial Guard! This cheers everyone up, until Julian and his band arrive singing and dancing in fantastic rags, masquerading as a troupe of traveling entertainers. The Alsace citizens loose heart.

Julian notices a young maid walking very nervously away from town and follows her to some ruins where he finds her feeding a band of war orphans. They worry that he will take their Nana away, since she has been stealing from her master to feed them, but he reassures them. Nana then tells them that this man is the former leader of the French Imperial Guard, and that he is here to help them all. But the children become upset, as many of their parents were killed by the French army.

Julian puts his plan into action. The children and the three musketeers are put to work planting the grapes which the village depends on for their wines. Michele and some of the gang work to frighten off the French army with tales of plague and disease. Meanwhile, the children and starving citizens convince the German army to help them with their planting. Julian slips off back to Paris, where he convinces Charlotte to sneak away in the dead of night. Anne catches them escaping. She had heard about the Bastille break-out, and suspected that Julian would be back for Charlotte. Anne and Charlotte commiserate about being women caught in politics, and Anne talks about her own marriage at the age of ten, and about the young man she truly loved, the one who always took care of her when she first came to France from Spain. She tells Charlotte to follow her heart and gives them leave to go, and as they leave, she asks Julian if that young man ever loved her in return. He tells her that he must have.

Later, Anne speakes with Mazarin, who promises her that he will always be by her side, as his place is beside her. At first flustered by something approaching a love confession, she is reassured by Mazarin, who tells her that his place is simply by her side. That is all.

In Riquewhir, Julian returns Charlotte to her parents. The marquis learns about Charlotte and Lazlo, and at first refuses, but then is talked around to blessing the two. Then Manderen appears. He had gone to fetch Charlotte's sister from the Germans, and now Margitta is returned home as well. Later, as the German's chare their food with the orphans, word comes ... the war is over! Peace has returned, and because of Julian's foresight and insistence, the town will have a crop to depend on in the coming year.

In Paris, Anne finally takes control of her court, determined to live her life strongly for her son. She will stand by his side as Mazarin has stood by hers. Julian comes to say farewell. This is the last goodbye, and the pair separate under a light snowfall similar to the one they first met under....
