Based on the best-selling Meiji author Mori Ougai's short story The Dancing Girl.

A tragedy where the lead character is caught between his love for a woman and his own identity.

Meiji Japan — a time of Japan opening up to Western influences. A young man who has studied seriously his entire life, as expected of him, Oota Toyotarou has been selected as one of the elite students who will study abroad in Europe. Upon first arriving, he defines Europe as a place of "freedom and beauty." But he isolates hismelf from the other students. During a journey to Berlin, however, he meets Hara Yoshijirou, a painter, and his eyes are opened to the narrowness of Japan and the way he might live.

It is then that Toyotarou has a destined meeting. A beautiful blond girl named Elis is crying on a street corner... She is a dancing girl at the Victoria Theater. Her father has just died, and she is in trouble over a matter of money. Toyotarou saves her from the predicament. The two fall in love.

However, when rumor of the two spreads, Toyotarou's funding to study abroad is cut off. Then he learns that his mother in Japan has died... At this moment when everything seems to be slipping from his hands, he meets an old friend, Aizawa Kenkichi. With Aizawa's help, he gets a job at a newspaper and moves in with Elis, starting a new phase of his life. Several months pass, and they learn that Elis is pregnant, bringing worry for the future into their formerly carefree lives. It is at this point, as Toyotarou wonders about never returning to his country again that Aizawa introduces him to an ambassador, Count Amagata. Count Amagata pays well for Toyotarou's translation services, and intends to bring him home with him again. Feeling homesick and a sense of duty to his native land, Toyotarou's heart waivers. Still, suspecting that Toyotarou won't be able to leave Elis, Aizawa goes to the girl and tells her everything, and then gives her consolation money. And with this, Aizawa, though a friend, drives the two into the abyss of tragedy....
