When they were infants, the twin brothers Gustave and Georges were left under a bridge. They were raised by the old gigolo Charles. Although they grow up to look very similar, their personalities are complete opposites. The younger brother Georges is always trying to curb the bad habits of his elder brother Gustave, and to stop him from doing crimes for Charles. Gustave is a popular actor in the Folies Bellejour.

1950s Paris. One day Charles goes to Gustave with the news that he has an invitation to a ball at Ermerance de Dufort's castle. He orders Gustave to attend, and to steal Ermerance's jewels while he is there. Ermerance's jewelry collection is famous. Charles also attends, to keep an eye on Gustave. Georges follows after them to try to stop his brother.

At the party, Ermerance hails Charles, who looks remarkably like her first lover. The two dance and talk. Meanwhile, Ermerance's niece, Josephine, has fallen in love with Gustave at first glance. When Gustave sneaks into Ermerance's bedroom, Josephine follows. She tells him she'll reveal the hiding place of her aunt's jewelry box, if he'll let her run away together with him....

Meanwhile, Charles attempts to steal Ermerance's necklace and is nearly caught. Georges bursts onto the scene and claims it was all his doing, and that the old man had nothing to do with it....
