Letters From Jakarta
Based on the 17th century historical woman Oharu, whose father was an Italian captain on a Portuguese ship, and whose mother was a native of Nagasaki, Japan. (She later went on to adopt a European name (Jeronima) and to marry a man and live in the Netherlands until her death at the age of 72.)
In 1639, as part of the Tokugawa policy of national seclusion, children born with foreign fathers were banished to Batavia (present day Jakarta). Among them was Oharu. In this fictionalized version of events she falls in love with Kinuya Saburou and they exchange letters.
