In the hinterland of India in 19__.
A young blind man by the name of Henry who seems to have a tragic history is sitting with his sweetheart Ta'ala, a native girl, in the little shabby hut of her father, Beem. While they are talking, Beem returns with a beautiful young British lady. She is Helen, Henry's fiancee who has come to India to search for him.
She begs him to return to their homeland with her, but Henry rejects the affections she still has toward him and lets her return alone.
And Henry begins to narrate to the native girl the unhappy story of his bygone days.....
Far in Scotland, Henry lived with his mother Mary and his sister Irene, leading a happy life. He was in love with Helen, his fiancee.
While Henry, Helen and Irene are playing, the younger sister by chance injures her ear. Her injury is found to be serious. In order to make money for the doctor's fee, Henry decides to enlist in the Cavalry Regiment in Bengal, India.
In a bar in Bengal, Henry, a lancer, is seeking to make more money to cure his sister's ear. Lured by a voluptuous B-girl, Shaloar, he makes up his mind to embezzle the service funds of the regiment. After taking the money amounting to 5000 pounds,he immediately makes an escape with the B-girl and joins the "desert bandits" with her.
Being wanton, the girl has already become the mistress of the chief of the bandits. The feud between Henry and the chief causes a fight and, as a result, Henry is blinded.
Hearing his story, Ta'ala advises Henry to surrender himself to the military authorities.
One night, the viceroy of India holds a carnival to which Irene, her husband Dr. Shylock, her mother and Helen has been invited.
During the party, the chief of military police comes to the scene and reports to the viceroy that the embezzler Henry has been reported in the neighborhood.
Passing by the viceroy's residence with Ta'ala, Henry hears Irene sing but dares not confront his relatives and Helen. Just then, two policemen approach and arrest him. Feeling ashamed of what he has done, Henry shoots himself.
And while Irene sings "Annie Laurie" their native song, Henry is dying.
